Renowned gospel singer and pastor Marvin Sapp is facing criticism after a resurfaced video showed him using aggressive tactics to collect $40,000 in donations during a church service.
In the clip, Sapp is seen instructing ushers to “close the doors” and urging attendees—both in person and online—to contribute. His goal? Each of the 2,000 congregants donating $20.
“This is a small seed… This is easy, saints,” Sapp told the crowd, reminiscing about spending $20 on a movie date with his late wife. He even called on those standing behind him to give $100, stating that “it costs to stand up here.”
As soft organ music played, Sapp personally counted out $100 while emphasizing that “giving is worship.” He then asked everyone present to come forward and show their donations.
The video sparked outrage on social media, with critics accusing Sapp of manipulating his congregation. Some called it a “shakedown,” while others questioned why a millionaire pastor needed to demand money so forcefully.
In response, Sapp defended his actions on Facebook, citing biblical principles of giving. He explained that closing the doors was a security measure and maintained that asking for specific amounts is “in order” with Scripture.
Still, many remain unconvinced, reigniting debates over financial transparency and pressure tactics in churches.
