Veteran reggae singer Cocoa Tea has died at age 64. His daughter, Rashaine Scott, confirmed his passing in an interview with Loop News, stating he died after 4 AM at a hospital in Florida.
Scott, his eldest child, shared that her father was a private yet proud man who always encouraged his children to be independent and educated. “He used to go into the Bible and read us the Ten Commandments,” she recalled. “He was a fighter and fought till the end.”
Born Calvin Scott on September 3, 1959, Cocoa Tea rose to fame in the mid-1980s with hits like She Loves Me Now, Rikers Island, and Good Life. His smooth vocals and conscious lyrics made him a staple in reggae and dancehall.
Beyond his own music, Cocoa Tea contributed to the industry by founding Roaring Lion Records in 2000 and organizing the Dancehall Jam Jam concert series from 2003 to 2009. His influence stretched beyond performance, helping shape the reggae landscape.
Cocoa Tea had been hospitalized for months, and reports suggest he died of cardiac arrest. His passing marks the end of an era, but his music and legacy will continue to inspire generations.
