The 2025 Grammy Awards were a night of music, milestones, and unforgettable performances. Beyoncé made history once again, while Kendrick Lamar dominated with his latest hit.
Beyoncé’s Groundbreaking Wins
Beyoncé, now the most nominated artist in Grammy history (99 nominations), finally won Album of the Year for Cowboy Carter, making her the first Black woman to do so in the 21st century. The last to achieve this was Lauryn Hill in 1999 with The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
She also set another record by winning Best Country Album, becoming the first Black woman to take home the award. Additionally, her collaboration with Miley Cyrus, II Most Wanted, earned Best Country Duo/Group Performance, marking her first Grammy win in a country category since The Pointer Sisters in 1975.
“Wow, I really was not expecting this,” Beyoncé said in her speech. “I want to thank God that I’m still able to do what I love after so many years.”
Kendrick Lamar Sweeps Major Categories
Kendrick Lamar’s Not Like Us, a diss track aimed at Drake, won Song of the Year and Record of the Year, making it only the second rap song to win the latter (after Childish Gambino’s This Is America in 2019).
In his acceptance speech, Lamar dedicated the win to his hometown:
“We gonna dedicate this one to this city: Compton, Long Beach, Inglewood, Hollywood, the Valley, San Bernardino—all that.”
Not Like Us also took home Best Music Video, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Performance, marking Lamar’s seventh win in the latter category. Earlier this year, the track became the first diss song to hit one billion Spotify streams.
