Toronto’s hip-hop community is mourning the loss of Bishop Brigante, a legendary battle rapper and artist, who passed away on March 30 after a courageous fight with colorectal cancer.
Diagnosed in October 2023, Brigante became an outspoken advocate for early screening, using his platform to raise awareness. His son, Carlito (a.k.a. Lito), confirmed the heartbreaking news, paying tribute to his father’s resilience and unwavering determination.
A GoFundMe campaign has since been launched to support Lito’s future, with donations helping fund his education or business aspirations. Brigante’s impact on Canadian hip-hop is undeniable—he was a pioneer in battle rap, collaborated with legends like Nate Dogg, and even made his mark in film and television, appearing in Narc and Orphan Black.
Tributes have poured in from across the industry, with Drake, Royce da 5’9, and The Alchemist among those honoring his legacy. King of the Dot founder Organik also reflected on Brigante’s influence, recalling how he became the first Canadian to appear on BET’s 106 & Park.
His legacy as an artist, fighter, and father will continue to inspire.
