Dancehall legend Beenie Man is under fire from Trinidadians after comments he made about their beloved street food, Doubles, during a recent Drink Champs interview.
While acknowledging that Doubles is “nice,” Beenie Man said he doesn’t eat it—because dogs don’t. His remark sparked outrage, with many calling it disrespectful. Among those responding was Trinidad & Tobago’s Foreign and Caricom Affairs Minister, Dr. Amery Browne, who subtly clapped back by posting a photo of himself enjoying Doubles, captioned with a Trinidadian flag emoji and Sim Simma—a nod to Beenie Man’s hit Girls Dem Sugar.
The controversy arose when Beenie Man was asked to name the best island in the world. He unsurprisingly chose Jamaica. When asked about his second favorite, he again picked Jamaica but expressed his love for Trinidad. However, his offhanded comment about Doubles left many Trinis feeling slighted, with some saying he could have been more diplomatic in his response.
